Chevening Reception 2009

Maria Villeda, Javier Paz, HMA Julie Chappell and Jose Zepeda

The British Ambassador Ms Julie Chappell hosted a reception at the official residence to wish a safe journey to 2 Guatemalans & 1 Salvadoran who have been awarded the prestigious Chevening Scholarships for the coming academic year.

The recipients for this year’s scholarships are:

Javier Andrés Paz Micheo - Guatemala.

Javier has secured a place on the Master of Science in Corporate Communications & Reputation Management programme at Manchester Business School.  On receiving his award, Javier said, “I’m really honoured by receiving this award and looking forward to make this experience one of the bests in my life. Also, it will be very important for me to come back to Guatemala, share my knowledge and build a better country”.

Maria de la Concepcion Villeda Wohlers - Guatemala.

Maria leaves for the University of Essex to study for a Master of Law in International Trade Law.  On return to Guatemala Maria said that her aim is to participate actively in the political life of the country, but caring at the same time for a sustainable development of her career in the private practice. Maria said that she’s identified with the British global values of liberty, democracy and the Rule of Law.

Manuel Alfonso Delgado Chavarria - El Salvador.

Manuel leaves behind his family in El Salvador for an exciting & demanding year at Sussex University to study Master of Science in Economics.  During his time in the United Kingdom, Manuel hopes to build his knowledge in Economics to actively participate in the elaboration of public policies that could improve the lives of Central American citizens.  He said that “the United Kingdom is the born place of economics as a science, has the most remarkable names in the field and the theories of free trade and liberalisation of the economies have proven to be right so far”.

Alumni from both the Chevening & the former DFID-funded Technical Development networks were in attendance to share tips on life in the United Kingdom.

On presenting the scholars with their tickets the Ambassador said, “We are very proud to be able to send these 3 professionals to the United Kingdom to further their studies and help them achieve their dreams. They join an elite group from around the world, coming together from different cultures and backgrounds, all looking to make a positive difference in their countries”.

“I am confident that Guatemala & El Salvador will benefit from these scholars’ contribution upon their return to their countries, and with their help, the UK’s relationship with their countries will continue to prosper and go from strength to strength.”

The Ambassador also welcomed back to Guatemala, Jose Zepeda, who has just completed his Chevening scholarship studying Conflict Resolution at Bradford University.
