Scholarships
The Chevening programme was launched in 1983, and is now the UK’s second largest scholarship programme globally. The Chevening programme started in Central America in 1987 and has, over the years, given a unique opportunity to over 50 talented Guatemalans, Salvadorans & Hondurans to study in Britain and develop their skills.
The application period for the academic year is now open. We are, as ever, looking for exceptional graduates from diverse backgrounds. We hope that Guatemala’s, El salvador's and Honduras' leaders of the future will apply to be part of the programme, including from the private sector and civil society.
Chevening scholars continue to make immense contributions to their home countries. In Eastern Europe, two of the region’s former Prime Ministers were Chevening alumni. The Chevening Programme is a passport to success whether in politics, business, academia or the media.
In Guatemala, the scheme is operated by the British Embassy with administrative support from British Council. The British Embassy also operates the scheme of behalf of applicants from El Salvador and Honduras.
Chevening Scholarships are aimed at applicants for postgraduate studies or research at UK institutions of Higher Education. Scholarships are offered for courses of 3 to 12 months..
Scholars are chosen on the basis that they will become opinion formers and decision-makers as well as influential friends of the UK. Successful applicants have the 'Chevening' qualities of ambition drive, and leadership potential, a commitment to change and organisation development, talent for innovation and creativity, and the ability to adapt to rapidly changing circumstances not only in technical and professional terms but also culturally.
The FCO offers successful applicants scholarships covering tuition fees of up to ₤12,000, flights to and from the UK, visa for the duration of studies and living costs of approximately ₤8-9,000 (if studying in London) and ₤7-8,000 (if studying elsewhere).
Updated June 2009
Applications for the 2010/11 academic year will be invited from August 2009.
The Chevening scholarship scheme is highly competitive. Over the past four years Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras have been awarded only one scholarship per country.
With the above in mind, it is clear that competition for the 1 scholarship is extremely fierce. Applicants with excellent first degree scores, sound employment experience with outstanding references and are able to demonstrate leadership or high level decision-making potential are considered for the scholarship.
We do not operate quotas for particular fields of study and applicants are assessed according to the merit of their applications (both academic and professional) and their English language abilities.
