Government funded scholarship schemes

FOREIGN AND COMMONWEALTH OFFICE

The Chevening Scholarships Scheme
 
(with contributions from Devolved Administrations, some Partners Across Government, Higher Education Institutions, charities and the private sector)

Purpose: To bring to the UK future leaders, decision makers and opinion formers.

Students: Young professionals (aged 25 – 35) with proven leadership abilities. selected by British Embassies and High Commissions overseas to study postgraduate courses or research in any subject field at a Higher Education Institute in the UK. World-wide average of 25 applicants to each scholarships awarded.

Marshall Scholarships
 
Purpose: Set up by Act of Parliament in 1953 by the British government as a practical expression of the British People’s thanks for the aid given by the United States under the Marsall Plan.

Students: Open to United States Citizens under 26 years old who are the best and brightest graduates of US universities, to undertake studies in any subject leading to a degree at a UK University. Selection is by regional committee in the US, under the guidance of the Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission. Awards are made on a competitive basis.

Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP)

(Funded jointly with DfID)

Purpose: To assist Commonwealth students and academics of high intellectual calibre to study in other Commonwealth countries. The objective is to strengthen common ideals and to promote the equality of educational opportunity at the highest level throughout the Commonwealth. DfID fund scholars from developing countries. FCO fund scholars from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Singapore, Bahamas, Cyprus, Malta, Brunei.
Students: Scholarships are primarily available for study or research for post-graduate degrees at UK Higher Education Institutions, but can be held for research or courses at other UK institutions. In special circumstances they can be awarded for undergraduate study. Nomination is through local committees in Commonwealth countries. Final selection is made in Britain by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission. Fellowship awards are generally made to established teachers in universities or medical schools for study at post-doctoral level.

DEPARTMENT FOR INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT (DFiD)

Shared Scholarship Scheme

(Jointly funded with certain British Universities)

Purpose: To help students of high academic calibre from developing Commonwealth countries, who would benefit from higher education in UK but are unable to come here for lack of finance.

Students: Must be unable to pay for their studies and training, and be outside the scope of existing support schemes.

Sino-British Friendship Scholarship Scheme

(Jointly funded with Sir Y K Pao foundation and Government of China)

Purpose: Study and research into areas of priority under China’s civil modernisation programme, especially science, technology, economics and social science, as well as industrial training.

Students: Selection by State Education Commission in Beijing with British Council.

DEPARTMENT FOR INNOVATION, UNIVERSITIES AND SKILLS

Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme (ORSAS)
 
Purpose: To ensure a continued supply of world-class research students in UK universities. Pays the difference in cost between home and overseas tuition fees.

Students: Awards are available on a competitive basis to post-graduate students of outstanding merit and research potential, liable to pay the higher fees chargeable to overseas students. For full time study as a registered research student for a higher degree at a UK University or one of four specified institutions. Academic merit and research potential are the sole criteria governing selection of candidates.

Fulbright scholarships
 
Purpose: To further practical understanding between the United States and Britain.

Students: US graduates, for pre-doctoral study in UK (taught course, dissertation research for PhD for US university, or year of independent study). US senior scholarships for lecturing or advanced research are also available.

UK TRADE AND INVESTMENT

Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Awards
 
(Funded by OST, industry and Research Councils)

Purpose: To boost the research capacity of UK research facilities.

Students: Outstanding students from India, China, Hong Kong, South Africa, Brazil, Russia and the developing world study for PhDs in top rated UK research facilities.

SCOTTISH EXECUTIVE

Scottish International Scholarship Programme

(managed by the British Council)

Purpose: Attract high calibre scholars to study for a Masters degree at Scottish HEIs in science, technology and the creative industries. Scholars also have the opportunity to network with businesses and apply for work placements in Scottish companies after their studies.
Students: 22 students from China, India, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore.
