HMA Julie Chappell OBE, presented her credentials to the Guatemalan Government (28 May 09)
Today the new Ambassador of the UK to Guatemala, Julie Chappell, presented her credentials to the President of the Republic of Guatemala, His Excellency Mr Alvaro Colom Caballeros in a ceremony at the National Palace. Miss Chappell said, "It's a great honour to represent the UK in Guatemala and to present my credentials in this beautiful palace. I look forward to working closely with the Government of Guatemala during the next 3 years, helping to promote strong and fair justice systems, low-carbon growth and good relations between Guatemala and Belize".
Miss Chappell joined the diplomatic service in 1999. She has been posted to Jordan, Iraq, Washington and most recently the Horn of Africa, where she worked closely with the Department of Peace and Security of the African Union. In 2004, she received the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her work in Iraq, which focused on involving women in the Iraqi political system and helping to rebuild local councils in Iraq's Southern provinces. She is currently the UK's youngest ambassador.
Miss Chappell has a BA in Political Science and International Relations from Oxford University.
